It is more than obvious that Serbia is a labyrinth of Despair & Institutionalism with stench of rot permeating from within. I can not but feel for all the literate talent that contributed within this blog especially Dawngreeter “This little bit of illiterate …......” and of course how can I forget duchesse and her lesson of etiquette and eloquence “I shudder to think how many similar comments there would be if more Serbs used the Internet. “ Oh dear me! Can you really imagine that Serbs have reached that level of evolution and sophistication to even begin to comprehend what INTERNET is let alone use it.

Just a small note in passing to CBF, hey Bro I completely understand your apprehension with SARMA & KAJMAK.Can you imagine 1 million “SERBS” eating 2-3 SARM'S each with say 300grm of KAJMAK and after a while they start to release that Potent gas and now imagine 6million. Saddam's arsenal of WMD's pales in comparison. Now wind being the way it is the whole of Europe would be covered by this mushroom cloud in no time. So what do you think would happen. I can just hear Robin saying to Batman “Gosh Batman George was right Saddam did have WMD's only he managed to hide them in SERBIA with Slobo's help”. So what happens next? Well, I can not even begin to contemplate. So if we want clean fresh air outlaw KAJMAK, KUPUS, PASULJ, PROJA etc., and bring in Big Macs, Burger King,Wendy's, KFC, Domino, Pizza Hutt, Taco Bell, Krispy Kreme , Starbucks ….....

By the way CBF do you think Tourist Organization of Serbia knows that you are expert in business development and communications? I am sure if they knew and especially the way you analyzed the effect that is ineffectiveness of their current campaign that they would have been only too glad to retain your services.
Sadly, Ljiljana, the good intentions notwithstanding, this has not been a campaign which talks up internal tourist destinations but rather one which feels rather more rah-rah nationalist (which serves a purpose for some people, but not so much for the tourism industry). But even more than nationalistic, it is a campaign that seems just wrong.

Almost every country with a little budget will spend it on “internal morale.” The US does it prodigiously but so too do European countries. In these kinds of campaigns, an emotional appeal to values is made, perhaps through some tourist-like images as well, but more to evoke a sense of national pride. I fail to see that this campaign has had that affect either.

If we want to talk up Zlatibor and other internal destinations, then let’s, by all means. But leave Serbia out of the picture: the target audience is quite well aware of where they are.

I admit – as you say – that the graphic execution is beautiful. I am only sorry that these billboards are not hung in other countries (in the appropriate language and alphabet) where the impact might be greater.

In the end, it seems like a colossal waste of money (our tax money which does not seem to pay for even more basic needs) for little outcome.

Yeah, Serbia has many undiscovered and forgotten places, but Zlatibor is surely not one of those. Zlatibor is fancy spot occupied and partially ruined already by people from big cities who come there to show off and spend lot’s of money.

Serbia did forget many other places though, will give you some examples: Pirot, Vranje, Bujanovac, Presevo, Kursumlija, Prokuplje, Leskovac... unlike Zlatibor, most people from Belgrade or Novi Sad will never ever visit those places in their lifetime, although Serbia is so small by territory.

That's the problem with the billboard campaign. It doesn't have a point, it doesn't target anything; it's just one more pointless waste of money.

And come on, kajmak, bred and potatoes?? As Chris said, what is the point of showing to me on a billboard something I've just had for lunch?
Maybe we should not talk much about hypothesis on Serbia - there have been many of them in recent years, mostly ending up with hard core stereotypes. And to talk about emotions, well, it's even more delicate, especially for those of us who feel all the ambivalences of living in Serbia, and in spite of everything - LOVING SERBIA.

National Tourism Organisation of Serbia, which I work for by the way, supports ideas promoting Serbia with excellence. "Serbia from the Heart", which is the name of the bilboard campaign, and a whole project behind it, is such an example. It is an independent project, which lastst for four years now - find out more at www.srbijaodsrca.org. So, National Tourism Organisation of Serbia DID NOT finance this campaign, but it provided full institutional support. The idea behind was to remind people living in cities like Belgrade or Novi Sad that Serbia has lots of forgotten or undiscovered places, natural attractions and keepers od the rich intangible heritage.

Anyway, these photos and messages are there - so enjoy them - they might show the way to discovering traces of beauty of the open hearted Serbia!

“	All around Belgrade this summer, billboards and posters have sprung up. They have pictures of enticing foods, they have catchy slogans luring the idle passer by to dream about voyages to exotic places. When you look closer, you see that (Hey!) it is the food you had for lunch, and (Wait!) this is advertising for Serbia! “

OooooooooPs SHAME, SHAME SHAME on Tourist Organization of Serbia for not placing ads for Golden Archers or Burger King better yet Taco Bell....ShAAAAAAAAAAAmEEEEEE on those in Serbia for advertising local cousin how dare they.

“	A campaign for Serbia would be good, say, in another country where potential holiday-	makers are at sixes and sevens about where to holiday-make. They might see a poster of delicious kajmak and sarma and say, "Ok honey, let's go to Serbia." However, the posters are written in Cyrillic characters, and the local holiday-maker from, say, Sheffield would have a hard time making it out. She might say, "Ok honey, let's go to Russia." “

O my god!!!!!!!!! is it just possible that SERBS are living in SERBIA?????????? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat THEY HAVE THEIR MOTHER TOUNGE IS NOT ENGLISH??????????????????
“	I begin to wonder about the target audience of this campaign. It is not foreign tourists, as anyone seeing them has already chosen to come here. It is not Western European tourists, because we cannot read the symbols. Who is it for anyway? “

Its earted jurtles
Into a rancid festering [drowned out by moaning and screaming]
Now the jurpling slayjid agrocrustles
Like jowling meated liverslime
Groop, I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes
I have Brie, or Camembert for breakfast often enough, but I don't remember the last time I had some good old fashioned kajmak, and I don't have any relatives in villages, as many inhabitants of Belgrade do, so I've never discovered the joys of country life. At the age of 30, I have yet to visit my first village.

All in all, what the TOS are doing makes sense to me, even though I wouldn't take them up on the offer. It'll be a while before I honestly wish to discover the authentic Serbian culture and its natural habitat.

and it makes perfect sense to do this in late August and September, when school starts and everyone's coming back from the holidays they've already been to. Nope, I think Chris hit the bullseye here, and knowing how TOS operates, I hope this blog gets republished as much as possible. It's on my Facebook wall already.
