I think the article looks a lot like the NY Times (mainstream, objective and prominent US newspaper) piece on Serb success at Rolland Garros

'Serbian Players Emerge From a Broken Country - New York Times'

I mean jeez... it seems that everyone is more comfortable with our 90s image. Why do we have to keep trying to get out of that black hole we were put in.

Can't we just have some ragged, crude ill-mannered tennis players who'll abuse the players, fight with the referee and spit at the hostile crowd. It would fit in so nicely with the established image.

After all, 'we know what kind of country they come from, right, BBC?"

is a good writer but I believe she fell in great love with Serbs as a people during her travels around. It is interesting that her travelogue from 1937 was a literature for the staff in General Michael Rose's HQ in Sarajevo during the war in 1990s. This is telling about the preparedness of the British military. There is a book about the destruction of Yugoslavia nad a Tito's biography (the title has it both) by Richard West. I do not know whether they are related in any sense. When he tried to explain Montenegrins, West compared them to Irish because of their character. I borrowed the analogy to compare Bosnians to Scots. Of course, there are lot of differences but there mioght be something in it.

 Honestly, very well written.
I agree with you and often take such wide definitions of people in strides. I doubt that there are singular traits one could assign to any nation. And it depends on who's assigning them.
What does kind of bother me is the view the west has of the Balkans. "A dangerous backwatter with strange people and a bloodsoaked hisotry, mysterious and forbidding yet soulfull and passionate."
I mean absolute bullshit ! The interesting thing is that this view of the Balkans is shared between British intelectuals and Balkan nationalists. Sheshelj has this same opinion of the Balkans, romanticised.
The reality is that the Balkans have been at the cusp of a civilizational devide since the fall of the Roman Empire, and that these "savage" people have been exposed to every single power rift the world has ever seen. If Katherine the Great's ass twitched or King George has a cramp, someone on the Balkans was getting killed.
Adding Eppitets to nations is much easier that dealing with the entire state of historical events that lead people to certain conclusions. It's hard to understand you subject, and It's the difference between bad writting and good writting.
Which, you certainly already know. Cheers!
Great story, Lucy, with a great reference to Rebecca West! Beware that developed Montenegro Coast was greatly influenced by Venice and Austrians. Go to Albania next for real wild Balkans. I visited Ducici vilage near Podgorica recently and the most memorable event were 3 Albanians from Rebecca's time frame.

Only Serbs were powerful enough to break Yugoslavia - is known answer to the above question. Loss of Kosovo control during Rugova is another example.
