It's pple like you that make me dislike ldp. Denigrating everything that was done up to now, you've got no realistic solution to the current problem, but full of righteousness you claim that the country's gone to the dogs and are ready to gloat as soon as another crysis develops. I'm looking for a REALISTIC solution, not for an utopistic ideal.

"Serbia has just started recovering from the 90's, the investments have started coming, the market economy kicked in, when the Kosovo problem escalates and stops it all"

To say that in Serbia market economy kicked in...one should know something about serbia and something about market economy.
Serbia under Kostunica went much further toward feudalism than towards market economy.
In a market economy, you can not have a bunch of Milosevic cronies laundering the money stolen in the nineties by purchasing huge tracts of the economy with the help of Kostunica. As it is, the people of Serbia are paying the same goods for the 6th time: Once they worked in the nineties and got taxed. Secondly, they saved the taxed money in bank accounts which Milosevic simply stole from them. Thirdly, Milosevic emptied all the pension funds and company accounts, state revenue accounts, moved most of the money abroad.
Than he gets the country bombed, and the people have to pay for reconstruction.(Paying for same things the 4th time)
Than the money already stolen is put in off-shore company accounts, and channelled back into Serbia.
Companies to be privatised are stripped of assets, so the price us reduced, and the "Oligarchs" by them on the cheap - with the money stolen from the people (This means paying the same thing for the fifth time).
Than the company aquired by the oligarchs, sells goods to the people at highly inflated prices, and they pay for them the sixth time. They (the oligarchs) can do this because Kostunica allows them a monopoly, and stops any legal action against them. Kosovo has nothing to with it. And thats why we DO NOT NEED KOSTUNICA.

I made it a point not to join any party, even though I mostly vote DS. I deffinitively do not support Kostunica, I just don't think he's the only one to blame for what's going on at the moment. On one hand, Serbia has just started recovering from the 90's, the investments have started coming, the market economy kicked in, when the Kosovo problem escalates and stops it all. The key is to show the investors that Serbia is still a stable market, in spite of our (legal if not legitimate) claim on Kosovo. For that you need a govt. that would at least appease the nationalists. Without Kostunica in it, there's no chance. Nobody wants to see SRS in power, it's bad for business, and we have to accept the truth that around 50% of Serbia is still nationalist. To change that, you need to give those pple something to do, you need to improve their lives. To do that, you need the investments from outside. To get investments, you need a fairly stable govt. Almost a circulus vitiosus. But not if Kostunica is there, as much as I dislike him. The only solution was to cut a deal with EU not to offer us to sign anything for a while, except a liberalized visa regime - white Schengen list and all that. Both DS and DSS would have gladly accepted that. They should've kept the potential membership paper aside, to wait for better times. That way, the govt would've survived, and in a few mths time, we'd be back in a pre-independance state of affairs, with an odd shout "Kosovo is Serbia". I don't see any other way out in the present constallation of things. Pro EU minority govt just won't cut it. The other option is more realistic and frightening. That's why we need Kostunica.

 Ah, the facts, yes.

1) Vojo was always against Slobo's extradition. In 2000 and in 2001. He promised Slobo in front of a Russian diplomat that he would never be extradited. He had neither the courage to extradite Slobo, nor the competence to stop it from happening.

2) The DSS actively held up the reform of the security services,, enjoying a relationship with military security service and, at the very least, flirting with elements from Zemun/JSO/DB. As president of Yugoslavia, our Vojo kept Aco Tomic, Nebosja "liberate Kosovo" Pavkovic, in position, and blocked removal of Rade "Ibar Highway" Markovic . Aco Tomic continued to be represented by Kostunica's "human rights adviser" Gradimir Nalic who happens to be cum to the current head of secret police and was "collecting Tomic's mail for him" when that guy was in jail. Look at the faces of Aco etc. to get a sense of what these men were about.

3) Kostunica and the DSS supported the efforts of the anti-independence camp in Montengro. Our Vojo even went as far as to present the EU mediator, Lajcak, with a CD containing the names of more than 200,000 "Montenegrins" living in Serbia who DSS thought should be included in Montenegrin election. Ahem. Kostunica's transformed security forces compiled this CD, taking a well-deserved break from cracking down on Velimir Ilic's highway contracting bizness, no doubt.

4) Dispute Kosovo's independence if it makes you happier. Because life is short and we should try to enjoy ourselves without hurting others. But you seem like an educated type, so I'd suggest you stay away from "disputers" who gather to chant "death to Albanians" and sport "Ratko Mladic: Serbian Hero" t-shirts. It's a bit of an ugly vibe and not many people feel comfortable with their adherence to the rule of law. Perhaps you can join the DS, they seem more civilised in their disputations.

There's no doubt that he's one of the most pathetic figures on Serbia's present political scene, however, not everything is quite the way you present it.

1) In 2000, it would possibly cause a civil war to extradite Milosevic, after such a narrow win at the October 5th elections. 6 months later, after DOS gained full control of the institutions, it was as inevitable as when Kostunica took the power, so his statement was made just to buy time until the situation calmed down. I don't think even Kostunica's enemies can claim that he had any kind of a deal with Milosevic. He might've been against the extradition, but he knew he was powerless stop it.

2) The transformation of security services was one of the reasons why Djindjic was assasinated in the first place, but do keep in mind that it was DS, not DSS who were transforming the security. DSS was not a part of the govt.

3) As a Serbian PM, there was nothing Kostunica could've done to preserve SCG after the referendum in Montenegro.

4) Kosovo might have proclaimed the independence, but until it is fully recognized by the UN, it will remain only as a disputed region, the likes of turkish Cyprus or Taiwan.

No one heard Kostunica calling for destruction of property, but everyone heard both him and Velja Ilic endorsing violence as demotcratic ! What else do you want?
LDP gave maps to hooligans? This is the best one. It just needs some explanation....How come the hooligans needed a map to find MacDonalds on Slavia and Terazije? Or to find the embassies that were attacked? Were they all from the provinces? The televised pictures of hooligans attacking embassies do not show any of them studying maps to find the target. But they show demonstartors being herded by plain-colthes policemen with walkie-talkies.It also shows there was no police protection at the embassies...Are you saying LDP has removed them?
It also shows police Hummers arriving with just a driver, without policemen in them...LDP removed those as well? So who is commanding the police while Mr Kioskovic is in hospital? The LDP?
And yes, the comparison with Hitler burning the Reichstag is correct. That is exactly why you are blaming the LDP!

Second, you state, probably with a wide smile, that Kosovi is independent state. I say: It's not true,
Kosovo is not an independent state. If it is unlawfully recognised by twenty countries (out of almost 200) and if there are no chances to get into the UN, then Kosovo is not independent.
Stop doing false assumptions.
I never imagined that I would be defending Voja, but the fact is that while he was at the Institute for Social Research he did some quite impressive work. I still think that the publication he co-authored with Kosta Čavoški ("Stranački pluralizam ili monizam?&quot was a landmark for its time.
Sadly, both authors have had less than stellar careers (what a euphemism!) as politicians.

At that time he was the right counter-candidate for Slobodan Milošević, regardless of his notorious nationalistic past -- he was "mr Kalašnjikov" on the October 5th as much as he is now. Koštunica became president after the Parliament has been burned and pillaged and the symbol of the "revolution" became Džo Bageraš waving his “četnik” flag that had two words on it "Ravnogorski pokret"! So, if the ideology of ethnic cleansing and Great Serbia was acceptable to those who stood behind him why are they now against it when they knew who they were installing and what the consequences might be? The only answer I can come up with is this -- they supported mr Kalašnjikov since he was the only one who could defeat Milošević, so greed for power stood behind proclaimed "ideals of democracy" not to forget the most of them shared his nationalistic ideology or were even more nationalistic. So, they are to be blamed for the Koštunica's politics as much as he is, since they supported one nationalist over another, even though Milošević was never as nationalistic as Koštunica is.

At the time, the logic was to go with the lesser evil, as is always the case with elections (why are Hillary and Obama both better than Bush? because they are lessers evils, not because they are completely good).
Even then, in 2000 - and I voted for DOS - I didn't like Kostunica, but I did like Nenad Canak, and Vesna Pesic and Goran Svilanovic and Zoran Djindjic. It was not about bringing Kostunica to power, but about defeating Milosevic. Kostunica, de facto, is a lesser evil. An evil nontheless, but politics is never so simple, is it? There are no right answers, just more appropriate ones; acceptable ones.

To blame Canak or Djindjic or Jovanovic for what Kostunica did is an error in reasoning. Or at least bizarre and, well, immature political thinking.
