Behind the Wall

Chris Farmer RSS / 21.11.2014. u 10:23

As it turns out, China may be one of the only places in the known universe where you can hide from Facebook.

For the next several days, I will be ensconced behind the Great Firewall of China and untouchable by Facebook, Google, YouTube, and 2,700 other websites which the People's Censor has deemed to be unbrowseable.

Iran, Vietnam, and North Korea are also on the list of blockers, but I think it is just me-too-ism.

The problem, as you might well imagine, is a weighty one. For these dark days, I will not know how to LIKE anything. I will be unable to share. I will, moreover, be unlikeable as well. Even more than usual, that is. Without Facebook, how will I know when to ROFL?

(Has anyone actually rolled on the floor laughing before? Show of hands...)

If I cannot share, people will understand that I don't WANT to share and mark me down as stingy and selfish. When I am at dinner, my host may ask me if I like the Thousand Year Old Eggs and Stinky Tofu. And will have nowhere to click!

VPN

Been there, done that.
Magic word: VPN (Virtual Private Network).
It's not too expensive and can help with FB, YouTube, Google, etc.
On the other hand, so many nice restaurants and places to visit that you can easily forget you miss all these services.

edit: By the way, I have difficulties to access your wordpress blog from Beijing. It takes a lot of time to load the page, and the result is badly formatted text (although this might be up to a browser I use).

Curious... I read that WP was working in China. I will check this week and see what might be done about it. Thanks for the heads up!

(BTW: do you use Chrome? - as a Google product that might be a problem...)

Re: VPN

I used Chrome at the first place, however it's the same in both Mozilla and IE (see the screenshot). I'll check it again once I get back to the hotel. I am typing from one of the Chinese government institutions, so they might additional restrictions here.

Re: VPN

Mixed success from the hotel. Chrome and IE didn't load complete page. On the other hand, Mozilla did after 5 minutes of loading. Anyhow, as I mentioned earlier, there are much more interesting things in Beijing than FB :)

Re: VPN

Without a VPN I cannot access WP at all... I am sure that I will survive the 2 weeks without it!

I find that I am more troubled by the restriction than the actual lack of access. Maybe one day it will change. But in the meantime, everyone will just get a short break from me!

If you are

staying at the best international chains (Shangri-la, Meridien, Westin) you may have access but be careful not to slag off "glorious leader" or country or some of their established customs...I usually get access through my iphone but not for a long time. Anyway there is so much to see and do by the time you get back to the hotel you won't care about social media. And please try to eat Chinese food this time. It's appalling to eat spaghetti in China!

ps: use wechat app - it works in china and its free.

OK, so you have a Facebook account. But everyday posting, liking, sharing, checking "likes" etc on Facebook?
Get a life before it passes by.

PS.
Tor Browser unblocks everything for free (at least in UAE). -------> Link.
Also you shall not be followed by the US or any other Government.

That was kind of the point I was making, but thanks for spelling it out.
