Story of the scorpion and the frog

I took my kids out the other day, and while they were playing around in the park, I unintentionaly overheard the conversation of a young couple, standing nearby. It was about stress, and the way people are dealing with it. As they were saying, there are two groups of people out there. Ones that keep all the stress and frustrations inside, for themselfs, accumulating it  throughout life; and others, that are putting it all out of their system, anywhere, anyhow. First ones, harm themselfes, and the second ones usually harms everybody else around them.

That story reminded me of the other one, that I heard long time ago, in a great movie, "The crying game". The story goes something like this:

A scorpion, needing to cross a river bank, spotted a frog nearby.
"Dear frog!" called the scorpion. "Please let me climb upon your back and swim me to the other side of the river!"
"No," replied the frog, "for if I do, you shall sting me, and I shall die."
"Nonsense!" replied the scorpion. "If I kill you in the middle of the river, you shall sink, and I shall drown and die with you."
The frog thought this over, and saw the truth of the scorpion's statement. He let it upon his back and began swimming towards the other side of the river. Halfway across, he felt a sharp pain in the back of his neck.
"Why have you stung me?!" cried the fro as his body began to stiffen. "Now you shall die as well!"
"Because it is in my nature," replied the scorpion as the frog sank beneath the waters.

Couldn't help wondering, is it really so?  Whether our actions are indeed so determined by our  nature? The hunter, and the hunted. Is it changeable?

Guess it's one of those questions...
