Eyjafjallajokull Smoke Screen

Chris Farmer RSS / 17.04.2010. u 08:22

Is it really a coincidence?

Only two days after a shocking report on the banking crash in Iceland, wherein many senior members of the Icelandic government were indicted, accused, and the Iceland central bank chairman, the former prime minister, and others sundry were formally charged with "mistakes or negligence" by the Truth Commission - is it really a coincidence that Eyjafjallajokull chose this moment to spit up fire and lava?

Speaking as a PR professional, it would seem to be the single biggest public relations smoke screen since the 9/11 bombers saved Bush and Cheney from Enron. Bigger even, since one could link 9/11 to a series of human decisions while the Eyjafjallajokull stunt needed a geological conspiracy as well.

Once a third of the glacier covering the Eyjafjallajokull volcano melted under the massive explosion, and after smoke and ash blacked the skies and downed planes all over the north Atlantic and Europe, who was worried anymore about who loaned how much to whom in the banking crash? The broken "rules about risk exposure" seem rather trivial in the face of the natural disaster causing air dangers, flooding, and the evacuation of people's homes.

Apparently they have all started going back home now, but when they tune in to the news, my guess is they don't care what David Oddson, Geir Haarde, and Árni Mathiesen were up to back then. The scathing financial report pales in comparison to the volcanic upchuck in which little Iceland upset a big chunk of the world.

Very clever indeed.

If I were the Truth Commission in Iceland, I think I would be fuming as much as Eyjafjallajokull! Think of the weeks and months of efforts to uncover these deep truths and errors leading to personal accountability in the financial crash - all eclipsed by the craterhead, all covered in grey ash, and all robbed of significance.

Between the report and the volcanic eruption, they had one day in the sun - I hope they used it well because their thunder will not be heard again. After everything settles, they will be lucky to get a little rumbling and uncomfortable shifting in seats.

Ok... we cannot credit the political class of Reykjavik with the ability to control seismic and tectonic forces, but consider this: the volcano has been grumbling and complaining for more than a month now. Geologists and seismologists have been issuing warnings and advisories for all this time that Something was Going to Happen. A few engineered delays of the commission, a little nudging of the media, and the report could easily have coincided with the eruption. Also, they say that the explosion came after a conduit in the volcano became blocked.

Hm...

Maybe it was blocked by mounds of shredded loan papers.

heh.

The joke that went viral yesterday says that there is apparently no phoneme *c* in the Icelandic language , so the request of the British authorities to hand over the cash that they had invested in the collapsed banks over there got lost in translation and the Brits ended up with heaps of ash instead.

On the other side ...

The Federal Reserve is refusing to identify the recipients of almost $2 trillion of emergency loans from American taxpayers or the troubled assets the central bank is accepting as collateral.

...

In an serious development the US SEC has accused financial major Goldman Sachs of indulging in fraud and with news becoming public major US stock markets like the Dow Jones saw its index being pulled down.

....

If only Mauna Loa got in sync with the Wall Street gang....

You've been hanging out with Serbs way too much, my man. Our conspiracy theory obsession seems to have nested comfortably in your brain, too.

Hm, I wouldn`t say Serbs are obsessed with various conspiracy theories..`cause even that phrase is invented to make fun of it, and it`s really not a joke at all....
if you consider how many " coincidences " happens every time when something big is about to be discovered or revealed, then just ignorant person can say- another conspiracy theory...
and ignorance is something that`s been developing quite well lately, starting from the " new school system" ..intention is obvious- to teach people how not to think...
just recall Vuk Draskovic`s assassination attempt on Ibarska, first news on national tv said- coincidence

Oh, he's already fried, methinks. Unavoidable.

But you guys have no idea how truly wonderful it is not having to listen to the planes flying by, especially the very first morning ones (usually the heavy cargo planes) which normally begin thundering about as early as 4:30 AM. On top of that, my house in South London is right below the Heathrow landing path.

So peaceful....

Apparently they're about to close the Serbian airspace, too, due to the spread of ash. Knowing what happens around these parts in broad daylight, I shudder to think what our own government "officials" will do under the cloak of... ash-induced darkness?
Bili Piton Bili Piton 15:05 17.04.2010

Re: OMG!

No ash was actually seen or felt around here. The weather's been fine and clear in the last few days. Today it's positively shiny.

The Serbian airspace is apparently closed as of a couple of minutes ago.

Something tells me the curtains of ash will persist above the Balkan peninsula for another century or so...

Haha

Well it's surely spreading from north-west, that alone is the cause for alarm

So can you trigger an eruption on purpose?
elderlywoman elderlywoman 21:06 17.04.2010

Re: Just remembered something

you can't trigger it in any anthropological way.... as for predictions... it the same like predicting an earthquake... you can say it will happen in some time but you can't point the year, month, day...

Cleese

John Cleese has a theory re. Eyjafjallajokull and I am tempted to accept it. He posits that the Norwegians have paid the Icelanders to burn parts of their country so that he can't leave Oslo, where he was a talk-show guest last week. I suppose he wants to say just how obsessively possessive the Scandinavians can be. :)

(He blew $5,000 on a cab ride from Oslo to Brussels. That's how much outsmarting the Norsemen will set you back nowadays.)
