But life has only the middle.
Thus it is with this little Saga of Slavonia. Things just keep happening. With each flip of the coin, heads counter tails, tails best heads. And even though I am still in the middle of it, a certain heads-or-tails pattern emerges....
Heads: I made it to Zagreb yesterday in excellent time, early for my meeting
Tails: I got lost inside Zagreb for an hour and was late for my meeting.
Heads: I parked badly and asked meter guy how I should pay. He said don't worry (seeing I was a foreigner) that he would mark me paid and he walked 100 meters out of his way to show me where I should go for my meeting.
Tails: When I returned to the car there was a fat parking ticket.
Heads: After an excellent and useful meeting, I took again to the road, in good time to get home at a decent hour.
Tails: About an hour or so out of Zagreb, in Slavonski Brod, my car superheated and told me to stop.
Heads: The tow truck got to me within about 5 minutes.
Tails: It was the beginning of a 36-plus hour wait (in the middle of which I sit still).
Tails: no way to fix it tonight
Tails: MAYBE by tomorrow
Heads: They brought me to a little hotel (I am sure this was organized and happened many times before) where I should wait. The hotel was nice, clean, and not a bad place to wait.
Tails: I had no other choice in the matter anyway.
Tails: I had not brought my chargers for computer or phone and my batteries were dying
Heads: Some other guest forgot his Nokia charger and I could use it.
If you try to tie all this together and make a Story out of it, you will come up short. The elements are all here for the plotline of a familiar movie. Out of town city guy gets stuck in the country side of another country, at the mercy of local gangster car mechanics and unable to return home.
By rights, if I wanted the story to end correctly, I should by now have made friends with all the local townspeople, organized a theatre event, saved a small child from being hit by a passing car, and be carried triumphantly on the shoulders of my new friends to my car which is working better than ever and for which the mechanic decides not to charge me!
Yeah, right...
Funny the things which can occur in the idle mind as it waits for the inevitable.
If I am still here by tomorrow at this time, be sure a new script will be ready for submission. Sadly my computer batteries will be long since dead and no one will hear my story.
Greetings and farewell from Slavonia!
